Goose is a jam band from Wilton, Connecticut, formed in 2014 by guitarist and vocalist Rick Mitarotonda and bassist Trevor Weeks alongside drummer Ben Atkind, whom Mitarotonda first met at Berklee College of Music. The name came from an inside joke about Mitarotonda's time working at a taco shop in Colorado, and the early years were pure grassroots: Connecticut basements, local bars, and a debut album, Moon Cabin, recorded in 2016 inside a barn in northern New Hampshire. Keyboardist and guitarist Peter Anspach joined in 2017, settling the core lineup that carried the band from small rooms to festival main stages.
The breakout arrived at the 2019 Peach Music Festival, where a widely praised set introduced Goose to the jam scene at large. From there the climb came quickly: late-night sets at Dead & Company's Playing in the Sand event in Mexico, an eight-date co-headlining tour with the Trey Anastasio Band in 2022, a two-night stand at Radio City Music Hall that ended with Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio playing the entire third set, and sit-ins along the way from Bob Weir, Father John Misty, and members of Umphrey's McGee. The rooms grew just as fast, from Red Rocks Amphitheatre and hometown arena shows at Mohegan Sun Arena to a first Madison Square Garden headliner on June 28, 2025, a show that stretched past four hours.
Stylistically, Goose folds indie rock, funk, psychedelic, and progressive textures into long improvised passages, a sound the band describes as indie groove. Critics have pointed to those indie and trance leanings as what separates the band from the funk and progressive rock of Phish and the folk, jazz, and blues of the Grateful Dead. That improvisation is what makes Goose tickets different from a standard rock show: the setlist gets written in real time, and keyboardist Peter Anspach mixes most nights for release shortly after the final note, so the live archive grows show by show. The company the band keeps says plenty too, since much of the audience growth came from sharing stages with Trey Anastasio, Bob Weir, Dave Matthews Band, and Dead & Company.
