My Chemical Romance is an American rock band from New Jersey, formed in 2001 by vocalist Gerard Way and drummer Matt Pelissier, with lead guitarist Ray Toro, bassist Mikey Way, and rhythm guitarist Frank Iero rounding out the lineup soon after. They earned a reputation as one of the most influential rock groups of the 2000s by fusing alternative rock, pop-punk, and post-hardcore with a goth-tinged look, theatrical vocals, and lyrics that read like confessions. The band spent years pushing back on the "emo" label even as they became one of the genre's defining acts, and their sound owes as much to Queen's arena-scale ambition and the Misfits' aggression as it does to the Cure's gloom and the New Jersey scene that raised them.
The climb was fast. Debut album I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love landed in 2002 on Eyeball Records, and an early fan base grew around MySpace-era free downloads and relentless New Jersey shows. After signing with Reprise Records in 2003, the band broke through with Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge (2004), a platinum seller powered by "I'm Not Okay (I Promise)", "Helena", and "The Ghost of You". Then came the 2006 rock opera The Black Parade, their defining statement, whose lead single "Welcome to the Black Parade" topped the UK Singles Chart and reached number nine on the Billboard Hot 100. Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys (2010) traded funeral marches for a brighter, power-pop-charged sound, and in March 2013 the band announced their breakup, closing the first chapter with the greatest hits collection May Death Never Stop You in 2014.
The reunion era confirmed what the touring history already suggested: demand for My Chemical Romance tickets never faded. They announced their return on Halloween 2019, and the Los Angeles reunion show sold out almost immediately, three Milton Keynes stadium shows sold out within minutes, and a full North American tour sold out in six hours. The Reunion Tour ran from May 2022 at the Eden Project to March 2023 in Tokyo, with the single "The Foundations of Decay" arriving as their first new music in eight years. In 2024 they headlined the When We Were Young Festival with a full performance of The Black Parade, and the Long Live The Black Parade tour launched in 2025 around the same album. Their stagecraft has always leaned theatrical, from the pyrotechnics of the 2007 Black Parade World Tour to main stages shared with Green Day, Linkin Park, and Blink-182. The Black Parade also went on to inspire a generation of 2010s artists, from Twenty One Pilots and Halsey to Billie Eilish and Post Malone.
