About Ohio State Buckeyes Football

Few programs in college football carry the pedigree of Ohio State Buckeyes football. The Buckeyes have represented Ohio State University since 1890, competing in the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision as a member of the Big Ten Conference, and the numbers hold up against any blueblood in the sport: a .736 all-time winning percentage, nine claimed national championships, and seven Heisman Trophy winners. Since 1922, the Buckeyes have played their home games at Ohio Stadium, the 102,780-seat venue on campus in Columbus, Ohio.

The history runs deep. Chic Harley arrived in 1916 and led the Buckeyes to the first Big Ten championship in school history that fall. The crowds he drew were the push behind Ohio Stadium, which opened in 1922 after being funded entirely by fan donations. Paul Brown delivered the program's first national championship in 1942, and Woody Hayes then set the standard every successor chases, piling up 205 wins, five national championships, and 13 Big Ten titles over 28 seasons from 1951 to 1978, all of which still stand as team records.

The modern chapters hold their own. Jim Tressel's 2002 team finished 14-0 and won the Fiesta Bowl to claim the BCS national championship. Urban Meyer's 2014 team won the first-ever College Football Playoff, and Ryan Day's 2024 team captured the first title of the 12-team playoff era, finishing the job with a 34-23 win over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the championship game on January 20, 2025. Layer in 39 Big Ten championships, second-most in the conference, and it's no mystery why Ohio State Buckeyes football tickets stay in demand season after season.

How many national championships have the Ohio State Buckeyes won?

The Ohio State Buckeyes claim nine national championships: 1942, 1954, 1957, 1961, 1968, 1970, 2002, 2014, and 2024, with seven of them awarded by the major wire-service polls. Five of the nine came during Woody Hayes' 28 seasons in Columbus, while Paul Brown (1942), Jim Tressel (2002), Urban Meyer (2014), and Ryan Day (2024) each added one. The 2014 title made Ohio State the first-ever College Football Playoff national champion, earned with a 42-35 Sugar Bowl semifinal win over the Alabama Crimson Tide and a 42-20 victory against the Oregon Ducks in the title game. The 2024 championship, the ninth recognized in school history, came via a 28-14 Cotton Bowl semifinal win over the Texas Longhorns and a 34-23 win over Notre Dame in the final.

Who is the biggest rival of the Ohio State Buckeyes?

The Ohio State Buckeyes' biggest rival is the Michigan Wolverines. The series dates to 1897, with Michigan holding a 62-52-6 edge through the 2025 season. The rivalry reached another level during the Ten Year War between coaches Woody Hayes and Bo Schembechler, when both programs built entire seasons around the annual meeting and met as top-five teams four times between 1970 and 1975. The rivalry is woven into game day itself: every letter M inside Ohio Stadium is crossed out with red tape, and halftime shows often feature something unfortunate happening to the Michigan logo. Beyond Ann Arbor, the Buckeyes lead 26-14 through the 2025 season against the Penn State Nittany Lions, their designated Big Ten rival since Penn State joined the league in 1993. A series with the Illinois Fighting Illini dates to 1902 and had reached 89 consecutive years by 2002, with Ohio State ahead 68-30-4 through the 2025 season.

How many Heisman Trophy winners have the Ohio State Buckeyes had?

Seven Ohio State Buckeyes have won the Heisman Trophy, one of the highest totals in college football history, with winners stretching from 1944 to 2006:
  • Les Horvath, 1944
  • Vic Janowicz, 1950
  • Howard "Hopalong" Cassady, 1955
  • Archie Griffin, 1974 and 1975
  • Eddie George, 1995
  • Troy Smith, 2006
Archie Griffin stands alone as the only two-time Heisman winner in the award's history, and the program has also produced 97 consensus All-Americans. The next Heisman contender is a perennial storyline for anyone with Ohio State Buckeyes football tickets.

What makes Ohio State Buckeyes football game days special?

Ohio State Buckeyes football game days are built on tradition, and the Ohio State University Marching Band is the centerpiece. The band anchors every home Saturday with four signature rituals:
  • Skull Session
  • Ramp entrance
  • Dotting the I
  • Script Ohio
Brutus Buckeye works the crowd, the fight songs "Across the Field" and "Buckeye Battle Cry" ring through the 102,780 seats, and a 2011 New York Times analysis by Nate Silver estimated that no college football fan base in the country was larger than Ohio State's. From the Skull Session to the last note of Script Ohio, a Buckeyes home game in Columbus plays out as a full-day event.
